The year was 1989 and the Recording Academy, in recognizing the genre for the first time, decided rap's revolution would not be televised. Hip-hop's relationship with the Grammys began with a mutual dis. Chance the Rapper, who released his mixtape, Coloring Book, on Apple Music in May, is up for seven awards. The Recording Academy changed its rules this year to make streaming-only albums eligible for Grammy Awards.
